Existing venture-assessment frameworks classify structure and financial return but fail a critical test. The Venture Studio Index categorises organisational function. Venture capital screening scores team pedigree and market size. Financial indices track liquidity and multiples. Yet none answer the questions that matter today: is this business grounded in a real problem? Are its people cognitively sound? Does it scale with agentic AI? Is it positioned toward a future worth actualising? Does it strengthen society or breed hidden weakness?

The venture assessment literature is extensive but incomplete. [1]

These gaps persist because conventional frameworks operate at one horizon. They assess viability for the current funding cycle, not viability across multiple time horizons while evolving toward a strategic future. They measure financial return, not societal contribution. They assume human capability, not track its erosion under AI dependence.

Strategic coherence is measurable. [2]

The CITAble Business Index™ (CBI) closes these gaps. It integrates three peer measurement instruments and adds a native alignment and citability layer to produce a complete reading: viability, AI-readiness, cognitive soundness, and strategic future fit.

The CITAble Business Index™ (CBI) measures whether a business is viable, AI-native, human-sound, and actively aligned to a strategic future worth actualising: whether it is, in short, Future-Proof.

The Four Headline Categories

CBI reports four category scores, each 0-100. These categories emerged from grouping the dimensions of the three sub-frameworks with the Principal’s original four concerns. They provide immediate high-glance value while preserving diagnostic separability.

CategoryWhat it scoresFed byPriority Rule
GroundingIs the business built on a real problem and a sound human foundation?Problem validity (native) + Cognitive vitality (CVI feed)Must hold. A weak foundation invalidates all else.
BuildabilityCan it be built, operated, scaled, or turned around?Operational tractability (native) + Scaling capacity (Agentic Gradient feed)Critical for execution. Viable strategy must be actionable.
Directional FitIs it aligned to and actively creating a strategic future worth actualising?Strategic alignment, active futuring, horizon coherence (all native)The unique CBI contribution: alignment to a preferred future.
Societal ContributionDoes it build long-term societal resilience rather than breed hidden weakness?Societal resilience contribution (SRI feed)The mission test. A resilient-society future must be worth creating.

Each category aggregates geometrically: strength in one cannot compensate for weakness in another. A business cannot buy a high CBI with excellent Buildability while failing Grounding. All four must hold.

The Eight-Dimension Radar

Beneath the categories lie eight scored dimensions plotted on a radar chart. Five are CBI-native; three are fed by the sub-frameworks: literally, building the Cognitive Vitality Index™, the Agentic Gradient™, and the Societal Resilience Index™ builds three of CBI’s eight dimensions.

The five native dimensions constitute CBI’s unique contribution. The three fed dimensions demonstrate the system’s fractal architecture: each sub-framework supplies a dimension, and each of those dimensions decomposes into that sub-framework’s full measurement architecture. Building the sub-frameworks literally builds CBI.

Two Novel Dimensions: Active Futuring and Horizon Coherence

Two native dimensions deserve separate explanation because they distinguish CBI from all existing venture-assessment instruments.

Active Futuring: Authoring Your Future

Foresight capability is measurable. [3] Convential future-proofing is passive: hedge, insure, brace. The business treats the future as exogenous, something to survive. Active Futuring flips this: the business actively participates in creating a future scenario in which it thrives. It does not forecast and prepare; it identifies a preferred future and helps bring it about.

A CITAble business authors a future in which it, and the resilient society around it, flourishes. This active stance connects three things: foresight-driven positioning, strategic alignment, and societal contribution. The future being authored must be worth creating.

Horizon Coherence: Survivable Value Trajectories

Horizon Coherence addresses a fatal flaw in long-horizon ventures. A business cannot build for thirty years toward a single payoff moment with unsurvivable value voids in between. Every snapshot along the trajectory must make coherent sense as a complete story on its own: a viable business at each stage, not a disconnected assembly awaiting final connection.

The financial expression is straightforward. [4] A long-term net present value is only actualisable by actively building toward it. But at every stage the trajectory must hold positive, coherent value.

This dimension is most interesting at portfolio scale. A long-term strategic fund can sustain deep-tech or stealth-mode bets through their droughts precisely because revenue-generating portfolio companies carry the trajectory. Temporal value coherence is achieved across the blended portfolio, not demanded of each company. Horizon Coherence is therefore both a standalone screening dimension (each venture’s trajectory must cohere) and the headline of the Portfolio Operations Function (the fund sustains coherence across companies).

Citability as Traceable Coherence

CITAble denotes substantive organisational property. Citability is the property that every effort traces back through strategy to a grounded problem, making the business transparent and provable. A CITAble business demonstrates clarity through a body of referenceable work with visible strategic logic.

Strategic alignment instrumentation exists. [5]

The CITAble framework structures this traceability: Context (problem understanding) drives Indicators (strategy and metrics), which reveal Tactics (execution), which produce Efforts (work), which become Artifacts (public proof). Each layer must trace coherently to the layer above. Citability is the emergent property when this traceability holds across the entire band structure.

A CITAble business is the ultimate profile of a company the fund wants in its portfolio.1 A CITAble business is the ultimate profile of a company the fund wants in its portfolio.1

The Venn Diagnostic: Three Sub-Frameworks, Four Overlaps

The sub-framework feeds create a powerful diagnostic grid. When a business scores well on only two of the three peer instruments, the overlap names an exploitable niche.

Strong onWeak onCBI readingFund action
CVI + Agentic GradientSRIAI-Native but not future-directed (may be HI-Scaling™, but no societal mission)Align to a resilient-society future to become CITAble
CVI + SRIAgentic GradientHuman-sound and mission-aligned, cannot scale with AIThe distressed-firm backing case: fund adds the agentic-scaling layer
Agentic Gradient + SRICVIAI-driven, claims resilience, but hollowed cognition (resilience claim false)Challenge the claim; CVI exposes the trap
All three + native alignmentnoneCITAble / Future-ProofBack and build into the mission-aligned portfolio

The third cell reveals a critical cascade. The over-documentation cascade exemplifies cross-framework resonance. A business heavy on AI documentation but light on human verification undermines critical thinking, which erodes the cognitive reserves society needs to renew itself. The resilience claim becomes false.

The AI-Native versus Future-Proof distinction crystallises here. AI-Native requires only two of three (CVI + Agentic Gradient). It means ready for the current technology moment. Future-Proof requires all three, integrated by CBI’s alignment layer. Future-Proof means aligned to a strategic future worth actualising that builds societal resilience.

Two Functions: Screening and Portfolio Operations

CBI operates in two functions sharing the same four-category spine.

Screening Function: Evaluating Candidates

The core use. It assesses a single candidate (new venture or distressed enterprise) for backing. Output: the four category scores, the eight-dimension radar, the meta-Resonance Wheel (a Resonance Wheel™ over the full system), and a CITAble verdict derived from the Venn diagnostic.

The distressed-enterprise signal is explicit. [6]

Portfolio Operations Function: Running a Strategic Fund

An add-on dimension for operating a portfolio of CBI-screened companies as a strategic innovation fund, venture studio, or coalition. CBI adds unique guidance that conventional fund frameworks lack.

CBI contribution to fund operationWhat it provides
Portfolio-company audit and assessmentContinuous assessment of each portfolio company on the CBI framework
Portfolio strategic cohesionAssessment of overall cohesion to the fund’s long-term strategic goal
Active future-proofing as reference frameThe fund is aimed at a defined future scenario; the whole portfolio is assessed against it
Portfolio Horizon CoherenceWhether the blended portfolio sustains a coherent value trajectory across horizons
Coverage / diversityWhether the portfolio spans the diversity that resilience requires

The emergent property of a CITAble-managed fund is mission-aligned and actively future-proofing toward a strategic goal. The fund becomes the reference frame within which each company’s CBI is computed.

Visual Companions and the Meta-Resonance Wheel

CBI ships with three visual companions:

  1. Four headline scores: 0-100 figures for Grounding, Buildability, Directional Fit, Societal Contribution
  2. Eight-dimension radar: the shape of the score and trend over time
  3. Meta-Resonance Wheel: cross-framework interdependencies

The meta-Resonance Wheel shows how dimensions resonate across the sub-frameworks, including documented cascades:

  • Weak Agentic Gradient Integration dampens CVI Critical Thinking → negative SRI Self-Renewal
  • Strong Active Futuring tends to raise Societal Resilience Contribution
  • Operational Tractability and Scaling Capacity couple (buildable + AI-scaleable = more tractable)
  • Active Futuring depends on Horizon Coherence for survivability

Each visual answers a different question: “What is the current state?” (headline scores), “What is the shape?” (radar), and “What happens if we try to change it?” (meta-Resonance Wheel).

Co-Evolution: The Framework Is Not Static

The CITAble Index System is itself a CITAble artefact, designed to co-evolve with its context. Three things co-evolve together: operations, assessment frameworks, and the definition of success.

The system practises its own principles. [7]

Concretely: agentic AI produced the Agentic Gradient. A post-agentic emerging technology would demand a new sub-framework and a new CBI dimension. The current three sub-frameworks are not final. The lexicon entries maintain the spirit of what each metric tracks while specifics evolve.

This co-evolutionary capacity is the system’s generative commitment, distinct from defensive drift-management. It ensures the frameworks stay relevant as the world changes, because they change with it, guided by preserved intent.
